Train cancelled: when does the railway pay for your taxi? (up to €120)
The two cases in which your taxi is reimbursed
First: the last scheduled train of the day is cancelled (or you miss it due to a delay) and you cannot reach your destination before midnight. Second: your scheduled arrival is between 0:00 and 5:00 and a delay of at least 60 minutes is expected.
In both cases the operator reimburses taxi costs up to €120. Important: keep and include the original receipt. Private car costs (mileage) are not reimbursed.
Example from the Rheingau
The last train of the day from Eltville to Wiesbaden-Schierstein (departing 23:10) is cancelled. As the destination cannot be reached before midnight, the taxi ride home is reimbursable up to €120 — with a receipt and the official passenger-rights form.
IC/ICE instead of a taxi
If your regional train is expected to arrive at least 20 minutes late, you may switch to an IC or ICE instead. The extra costs are reimbursed afterwards (excluding group day tickets, combi tickets and the Hessenticket).
How to get your money
Complete the official form (benefit 3: "reimbursement of costs"), attach your ticket and the taxi receipt, and send everything to the responsible operator — by post for RMV, by email for VIAS. Our assistant does this in about 3 minutes and produces a ready-to-send PDF.
